Etna Vineyards
Our Etna Vineyards extend across a wide amphitheatre, sloping down
towards the south, between the white snow and the sea, at an altitude of between 650 and 700 metres above sea level.
The characteristic mountain climate, the particular exposition, the presence of bordering oak and chestnut forests create, besides an enchanting landscape, a “unicum” for the production of wines with a marked personality.
The nature of the lands is strictly tied to the volcanic matrix: loose and deep, they have a sub-acid reaction, rich in micro-elements (iron and copper) and with a medium supply of potassium, phosphorous and magnesium, while being poor in nitrogen and lacking in calcium.
The climate is very different from that of Sicily; the altitude and the effect of the massive volcano influence the temperatures and rainfall. The minimum temperatures in Winter and even in the period of the beginning of the germination period seldom go below 0°, which can be damaging for the vines. The maximum temperatures in Summer are rarely elevated.
Particularly interesting, from the oenologic point of view, is the elevated day and night temperature differences (even 30° differences in 24 hours) that are registered during the Spring-Summer period.
The rainfall, can be even 10 times more with respect to the rest of Sicily, practically absent during the summer, precipitation is better distributed during the Autumn-Winter period, and often in conjunction with the harvest period.
